GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of Oberheim SEM V 1.1.6 and Wurlitzer-V 1.0.5, the latest updates to its software recreations of the classic Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module® and Wurlitzer EP 200A electric piano…

These free updates bring performance, stability, and MIDI improvements to two of Arturia’s most popular Analog Classics, the Oberheim SEM V and Wurlitzer-V, respectively released to critical acclaim in 2011 and 2012. The best just got a whole lot better!

Using Arturia’s TAE® (True Analog Emulation) technology, Oberheim SEM V faithfully reproduces the analogue warmth and ingenious interface of the classic Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module® (SEM) to which it owes its inspiration and name. Created by legendary synth designer Tom Oberheim back in 1974, the dual-oscillator SEM was originally conceived as a way of beefing up weaker-sounding compatible analogue monosynths of the time before becoming a sought-after sound in its own right — so much so that its American creator came up with a series of successive SEM-based instruments, first pairing up two SEMs with a 37-note keyboard and a simple analogue sequencer to form the Two Voice, Oberheim’s first compact, programmable, polyphonic synthesizer in 1975, followed by the larger Four Voice (featuring four SEMs) in 1976 and enormous Eight Voice (eight SEMs) in 1977. Though these instruments were groundbreaking, polyphony was achieved with multiple SEMs so each voice/module had to be programmed independently, which was quite a daunting task — even by somewhat shaky Seventies standards!

But that was then, this is now. Today, Arturia’s eight-voice, MIDI-controllable, multitimbral Oberheim SEM V software solution brings many more truly 21st Century developments to the table — or even desktop (or laptop)! Additional ARPEGGIATOR, PORTAMENTO, SUB OSC, LFO 2, OVERDRIVE, CHORUS, and DELAY parameters, plus an in-depth Modulation Matrix module, all combine to considerably widen its sonic palette and appeal above and beyond merely mirroring the original Oberheim SEM hardware. Oberheim SEM V valiantly does that, too, of course — right down to replicating the behaviour of Oberheim’s original multi-SEM synths’ specific voice assignment and triggering, thanks to its advanced ‘fold-out’ 8-Voice Programmer, for example.

Arturia has taken a different approach with Wurlitzer-V, however. Unlike traditional sampling libraries, its embedded physical modelling engine readily reproduces the agreeable acoustic properties of the well-known Wurlitzer EP 200A electric piano’s musically distinctive reeds, key action, and amplification characteristics by ‘constructing’ played notes in real time. In doing so, it realistically recreates a staple sound of the Seventies in a cost-effective performance package fit for 21st Century compositions.

Yet those beloved bright and overdriven ‘Wurly’ sounds so ingrained in popular music culture thanks to artists as musically diverse as The Beatles, Supertramp, and Marvin Gaye are as much down to a creative combination of admirable amplification, mic placement par excellence, and precision processing, with multiple analogue chorus, phasing, and tape echo units often being used to fashion a deeper, luscious tone. Which is exactly why Wurlitzer-V effectively places its users in an authentic-sounding Seventies-style recording studio, complete with classic tube amp emulations, modelled mics, and stompboxes galore — everything needed to achieve that vintage vibe, in fact. But that’s not all. Alongside additional in-depth performance parameter controls, Wurlitzer-V also lets users choose between three output modes — Studio, Stage, and Rotary, each with a distinctly different sound.

Anyone wishing to transport those tricky still-sought-after sounds of the Seventies screaming and kicking into the convenience of present- day DAW-based workflow simply owe it to themselves to check out Oberheim SEM V 1.1.6 and Wurlitzer-V 1.0.5 — now better than ever, thanks to those latest updates!

Oberheim SEM V and Wurlitzer-V can each be bought from the Arturia online store (http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/buy/online-shop.html) as software downloads for €99.00 EUR/$99.00 USD or as boxed versions for €119.00 EUR/$129.00 USD.

Existing Oberheim SEM V and Wurlitzer-V users can download the latest updates for free from here: http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/downloads/updates.html

Peavey’s most advanced and awarded line of modeling amplifiers are now available.

May 15, 2013, Meridian, MS – Industry innovators Peavey Electronics announce their next generation line of modeling amplifiers, the Vypyr® VIP series, are now shipping. As the world’s first Variable Instrument Performance™ amplifiers, the Vypyr VIP series brings an entirely new level of technological sophistication and tonal versatility to the world of amp modeling. Peavey introduced the series at the 2013 NAMM Show, where it earned the NAMM Best In Show “Gotta Stock It” award among its numerous accolades.

Although an incredible electric guitar amplifier, the Vypyr VIP series are the world’s first amplifiers that contain Electric guitar, Bass guitar, and Acoustic guitar amplifier models. With Peavey’s Variable Instrument Input, a single amp can provide amplification for all three instrument types.

Not only are players able to switch from an electric amp, to a bass amp, to an acoustic amp, but they also have the ability to access instrument models as well – another Peavey first!

With the Vypyr VIP series, players can access realistic instrument simulations, allowing them to manipulate the sound of their electric guitar to mimic an acoustic guitar, a bass, a 12-string guitar, and more.

Using the combination of a powerful 32-bit, floating-point SHARC® processor and patented TransTube® analog circuitry, the Vypyr VIP series contains innovative technology to create the most diverse and best sounding modeling amplifiers available. The Vypyr VIPs feature new acoustically ported semi-closed back enclosures, which create an extremely full sound. Guitarists also have access to over 70 amp, instrument, stompbox models and rack style effects, allowing for endless creative options and a completely new range of tonal possibilities.

In order to easily view all parameters at a glance, the Vypyr VIP series includes Peavey’s WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface. The WYSIWYG interface allows the user to be able to identify the proper position of the encoders from preset to preset. In addition, one control can be used for multiple functions.

Vypyr’s recording capabilities, edit software, and store presets are easily accessible via the new USB bi-directional data and audio port. The Vypyr VIP series also includes a MIDI port for use with Sanpera® foot controllers.

The Vypyr VIP series consists of three combos: the 20-Watt VIP 1, the 40-Watt VIP 2, and the 100-Watt VIP 3. Peavey’s PowerSponge™ variable power enables players to adjust the power output to suit any playing situation. The Vypyr VIP also contains convenient features like a built-in chromatic tuner, on-board looper with Sanpera pedal control, studio quality headphone out, and much more.

TWISTED SISTER, DANZIG, KING’S X Members Confirmed for Revolution event on Friday May 31st

Amityville NY (May 15, 2013) Brian Thomas Tichy and his partner Joe Sutton have decided to bring their John Bonham celebration, “Bonzo Bash”, to Long Island commemorating the life of rock’s ultimate drummer – the drummer for Led Zeppelin, John Bonham. The show has been booked for Friday May 31st at Revolution 140 Merrick Rd in Amityville to pay tribute to John Henry Bonham on what would have been his 65th birthday.

Since the first epic/never done before Bonzo Bash (“The Groove Remains The Same”) on September 25, 2010, which brought 18 of the world’s best drummers together on one drum kit in West Hollywood, Tichy and Sutton have done a total of five Bonzo Bashes, with each one gaining more momentum and much-deserved attention. With a list that is far too long to include here, it should be noted that 50 drummers and 30 guests have performed over 100 songs through the course of these marathon shows! The last Bonzo Bash, on January 24, the most-talked-about show at the NAMM music convention, sold out and a second night could have been added! 30 drummers played with a total of 52 performers over the course of 5 hours!

Tichy said: “I had this idea back in 2010 when one day it occurred to me that John Bonham and LED ZEPPELIN were the only band I had never stopped listening to for over 30 years. The idea literally came to me in that instant. I was going to go for a backyard party or a kegger in a rehearsal room, but then figured if all these drummers actually get together and make it a “thing,” it should be made available for people to see so I talked to promoter Joe Sutton, a Zep Head himself, who happened to have the exact night on hold at Key Club and that was that!

“The concept is simple: each drummer chooses his or her favorite LED ZEPPELIN song and plays it on an amber acrylic drum kit with house band THE MOBY DICKS. This coming together of the world’s best drummers also brings with it an undeniable, communal spirit that is very hard to find at any other type of rock show. We all have a great time as it’s all about celebrating the amazing drumming of John Bonham and his timeless impact. The energy is thick, the egoless vibes prevail and we all walk away with great memories! I’ve never seen so many smiling faces at a rock show!

“People constantly ask for us to take this juggernaut on the road but in theory, it’s not unlike a river crossing of wildebeests during migration season! But, by going to a city like New York with my home state New Jersey next door and inviting the best drummers in the area, it became apparent that we may be able to pull this off after all!

“So, grab a couple tickets and get dazzled by a great house band and one of the most unique shows you’ll ever see featuring some of the world’s best drummers around!”

Now positioning any iPad or iPad mini on stage, in the studio, in the office or at home is easier than ever

May 16, 2013 - IK Multimedia, the leader in mobile music-creation apps and accessories, is shipping the new range of its smart iPad holders for stage, studio, office or home. The new iKlip™ 2 for iPad, and for iPad mini, are enhanced versions of the most popular iPad microphone stand holders for musicians and presenters, while iKlip Studio for iPad mini completes the range of IK’s practical tabletop stands for 7” tablets.

All the new iKlips are made in Italy from durable-but-light thermoplastic, and sport a sleek industrial design. Although the new ergonomically designed iKlip models were created with musicians in mind, they are also perfect for business presentations and speeches; educational, video and camera applications; health or kiosk-type information systems and everyday use in the office, at home or on the road.

Here are the new models:

iKlip 2 is designed to securely hold an iPad 2 (and later) or an iPad mini on a microphone stand or other vertical or horizontal “pole” up to 2.1”/30mm in diameter. It secures to the pole in seconds with a sure-grip tightening system, leaving the threaded end of the stand open for other uses. iKlip 2 features a new ball-joint design that gives it amazing flexibility for infinite multi-angle adjustment and positioning with a simple touch. It can be adjusted both vertically and horizontally to find just the right viewing angle, and can be quickly rotated between portrait and landscape mode. The new iKlip 2 is available in two models: for the regular iPad and for the new iPad mini.

The new iKlip 2 adapters offer the ultimate in safe, secure holding of iPad and iPad mini at the optimum required viewing angle, and they are perfect for hands-free viewing and use with any type of apps and accessories, leaving all the iPad buttons and ports free from obstructions.

iKlip 2 applications are countless, and range from holding iPads for musicians on stage to teleprompter-style presentations on boardroom podiums; from securing the iPad anywhere for video and camera applications to mounting it as a multimedia display; from keeping the iPad on hand for order taking or form entry to using it in health care environments, as well as a multitude of other uses.

iKlip Studio for iPad mini is a new tabletop stand that follows in the footsteps of the iKlip Studio for iPad, a tabletop multi-angle holder for iPad and other 10” tablets. It offers the same great features and design, including an easily adjustable viewing angle, support for portrait or landscape mode, and the ability to fold up flat for total mobility. iKlip Studio for iPad mini can also hold other 7″ tablets such as the Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab, and Nook, plus it can host a device with or without a case or protective cover.

iKlip Studio for iPad mini offers 8 viewing angle options in 10° increments: from a near vertical orientation to near horizontal, making it the perfect companion for any flat-surface application. It provides quick and easy set-up in seconds, and features non-slip feet that prevent unwanted movement of the device — securely holding it in place even when used with the most rigorous tap-intensive apps such as those used in music making or gaming.

iKlip Studio for iPad mini folds flat and fits easily in briefcases, carrying bags, backpacks and gig bags. With the line of IK microphones and apps like iRig MIC, iRig MIC Cast and iRig Recorder, any tablet can become an audio-capture-and-editing suite for podcasts, classroom lectures, boardroom meetings and presentations. When used with a wireless Bluetooth keyboard, the iKlip Studio for iPad mini is the perfect mobile workstation for tight spaces like airplane seats, crowded cafes, restaurants, lecture halls and library kiosks.

Pricing and Availability

The iKlip 2 for iPad and iKlip 2 for iPad mini are available now at electronic and music retailers around the world, and are both priced at $39.99 / €29.99 MSRP (excluding taxes). The iKlip Studio for iPad mini is priced at $29.99 / €24.99 MSRP (excluding taxes).

ASHEVILLE, NC – May 16, 2013 – At BlackBerry Live this week, Moog Music announced the release of Animoog®, it’s award-winning app for the BlackBerry® Z10™ smartphone. Animoog, previously only available on iOS®, is Moog’s first music creation tool for the BlackBerry® platform.

The Animoog app for BlackBerry 10 was unveiled earlier this week and will continue to be showcased throughout BlackBerry’s annual enthusiast, developer and partner conference in Orlando, FL. From May 16th through May 23rd (the date that would be Bob Moog’s 79th birthday), Animoog will be available on the BlackBerry® World™ storefront for the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone at an introductory price of $.99. After this promotional period ends, Animoog will return to its regular price of $9.99.

“We are very excited about the release of Animoog on the BlackBerry 10 platform and about our relationship with BlackBerry,” said Mike Adams, President and CEO of Moog Music, Inc. “BlackBerry has long been the choice for business professionals who in many cases are in creative fields. Now, for the first time, we can offer a high performance music creation tool to artists and synthesizer enthusiasts that prefer BlackBerry,” said Adams.

“Moog is a long time iconic brand in the music industry and their synthesizers are used by major artists worldwide,” said Martyn Mallick, VP of Global Alliances and Business Development at BlackBerry. “We are thrilled to have Animoog available on the BlackBerry 10 platform”.

Moog Music is driven by a company culture that lives at the intersection of technology and music. This culture is celebrated annually at Moogfest, its multi-day festival in honor of the innovative spirit of its founder, Bob Moog who was inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame last week. Moog’s early adoption of the BlackBerry 10 platform is in line with this pioneering philosophy.

“This project is the beginning of a collaboration with BlackBerry’s innovative user experience team and an exploration of new means for creative expression with handheld devices. It is always our intention to create better tools for artists and this relationship allows us to investigate exciting future possibilities,” said Emmy Parker, Moog’s Senior Brand Manager.

For years, Southwest Airlines has innovated the skies by finding unique ways to surprise and delight its Customers. Each musician will board Southwest flights across the United States on separate days, performing at least two songs Live at 35™ (35,000 feet, that is), beginning with Parmalee on May 13. The tour will conclude with Easton Corbin on May 30. The artwork for Southwest’s custom guitar was designed by a Southwest Airlines Employee, and the guitar itself was constructed by Taylor Guitars. Click the image below to see how the custom GS Minis were crafted at one of Taylor’s Factory and hear the company’s Master Builder, Andy Powers, elucidate on what craftsmanship and quality mean to this top-selling guitar manufacturer.

“We’ve sort of flirted with greatness,” R.E.M.’s Peter Buck admitted. “But we’ve yet to make a record as good as Big Star’s Third.”

Although Big Star were together for less than four years and had little commercial success, the influence of their three original albums – #1 Record, Radio City, and Third– continues to grow. Big Star bucked all the musical trends of the ’70s. In an era of glam and prog rock they wrote catchy, radio-friendly power-pop tunes that remain influential today. Artists as diverse as Primal Scream, R.E.M., The Bangles, The Posies, Teenage Fanclub, Jeff Buckley, and Wilco have spoken about the Big Star legacy.

In the decade since the original version of this book was published, Big Star have made a belated fourth album, In Space, and released an acclaimed four-disc retrospective,Keep An Eye On The Sky. The band have also lost two original members, an influential producer, and the photographer of their iconic logo. But interest in the group is as high as ever in the 21st century, with new bands such as Yo La Tengo and Hot Chip – and even pop superstar Katy Perry – carrying the flame.

Now fully updated, and drawing on firsthand interviews with the band, family members, friends, and the major players at Ardent Records, this is the definitive history of rock’s forgotten band.

Rob Jovanovic is the author of numerous books on such diverse subjects as Pavement and Kate Bush, Beck and George Michael, R.E.M. and The Kinks. His books have been published in ten countries and in nine different languages. He is also a contributor to magazines including Mojo and Uncut. He lives just outside Nottingham with his wife and two young children.
