The 2013 Winter NAMM Show

Another year came and went, and January brought our team of editors to sunny Southern California for the annual Winter NAMM Show. Oh wait—there was no sun! It rained on us every day! And to make matters worse, a number of members of our editorial team were unable to make the trip at the last minute do to unforeseen circumstances beyond their control (meaning a handful of us had to pull double and triple duty trying to report on all the new gear).

This year’s show was enormous, with over 93,000 registered guests. The show’s mantra may as well have been onward and upward, as in, to the second and third floors! More big manufacturers moved their exhibits upstairs than ever before, including Roland, Paul Reed Smith, Peavey, and Drum Workshop. It was refreshing checking out the latest drum gear in a quiet room. Inconceivable, we know.

This year’s larger show was refreshing in that clearly, the industry’s darkest recessionary chapter is behind it. Business appeared to be thriving. But gear-wise, this was definitely more of an evolutionary year than a revolutionary one. Nothing really floored us, though we did see plenty of new toys we want to take home. Although we reported on things as we saw them via the usual social media outlets, the formal report here is useful after-the-fact as an indicator of the real treasures from the show. We take our time compiling it, thinking about what gear from the show really sticks in our heads after the NAMM hoopla dies down.

That said, on with the report and video!

Video featuring the song, "ReMarcoble," from the new album of the same name by virtuoso guitarist, Marco Sfogli. Check him out at www.marcosfogli.com or just race to the store to purchase this incredible new CD here. We consider this album a must-have for any serious rock guitarist. Brilliant stuff from start to finish. Yes, it's truly remarcoble!
