Ah yes—the guitar we’ve all been impatiently waiting for. If you’re a fan of Chris Buck or his band Cardinal Black, you already know the legend of his Yamaha Custom Shop goldtop Revstar loaded with P‑90s. And if you are a fan, you’ve probably spent the last few years pleading with Yamaha to release a version the rest of us could actually buy. Well, the guitar gods have spoken, and our collective wish has finally come true.
At NAMM this year, Yamaha unveiled the Chris Buck Signature Revstar Standard, and it instantly became one of the most talked‑about instruments of the show. Chris teased it during media night, then unleashed it in full force onstage with Cardinal Black. He even spent time in the Yamaha room chatting with media, surrounded by gleaming rows of his new signature model (yes, we were absolutely losing our minds). Yamaha had a few units available to play on‑site, only adding fuel to the fire. Announced in February and released in March 2026, these guitars are already hard to track down.
Yamaha’s Revstar line has always occupied a unique space—somewhere between modern precision and vintage swagger. They’ve managed to carve out an identity that feels familiar yet fresh, with styling and colors that stand apart from the typical single‑cut crowd. The Chris Buck model simplifies the formula, leaning into a more classic aesthetic while preserving the contemporary feel that makes the Revstar lineup special. And if you’ve been craving a great P‑90 guitar, this one should shoot straight to the top of your list.
Features
The Yamaha Chris Buck Signature Revstar Standard includes:
- Chambered body using Yamaha’s acoustic design technology
- Simplified controls: a single master tone and master volume—no push/pulls, no focus switch
- Custom‑voiced P‑90s with Alnico 3 magnets: slightly lower output with more clarity and punch
- Honey Gold finish reminiscent of a vintage goldtop Les Paul
- 3‑piece mahogany neck with carbon steel reinforcement
- 22 stainless‑steel frets on a 12-inch radius rosewood fretboard
- Signature Revstar inlays from the original line
- TonePros wraparound bridge for enhanced resonance and sustain

If you can’t tell, we were eagerly awaiting this guitar—and it did not disappoint. It’s gorgeous! The honey gold finish is just a touch lighter than a traditional Les Paul goldtop (we compared it with the two in our collection), and the guitar balances beautifully at just under eight pounds—a weight that seems consistent with other owners’ reports.
The pearloid, waffle, die‑cast tuners feel smooth and classy, whether they’re 15:1 or 18:1. The back of the neck and headstock have a satin finish that makes everything feel fast and effortless, while the double‑cut body and headstock face are done in a gloss poly. The back of the guitar is a deep, rich, reddish‑brown that perfectly complements the warm gold top.
The nut, an engineered polymer, feels similar to Graph Tech Tusq—smooth slots, solid sustain, and stable performance across temperature changes. Neck dimensions are dialed in:
- Nut width:9 mm (1.65")
- Thickness: 21 mm (0.827") at the nut, 23.9 mm (0.941") at the 12th fret
- Profile: a comfortable modern “C-ish” taper, thinner than the original Revstars but not too slim
The rosewood fretboard looks beautifully dark, and after weeks in our Arizona desert studio, the stainless frets still showed zero sprout.
Fretwork was flawless: no sharp edges, no dead spots, no buzzing.
The TonePros AVT2 wraparound deserves its own shout-out. Lightweight aluminum, adjustable intonation, thumbwheel posts—this bridge is all about maximizing resonance. Just be sure to read the instructions: the height is adjusted via a hex nut under the bridge. Don’t grab the top screws unless you want a bad day.
The custom P‑90s, voiced by Chris and Yamaha, differ from the standard Revstar models. The Alnico 3 magnets give them a lower-output, more open voice with fantastic clarity, even under gain. There’s a master volume and tone—both usable through their full sweep—with no treble bleed needed. The amber top‑hat knobs feel great, and the 500k Alpha pots have that perfect tension (no floppy knobs here). Switching is handled by a smooth 3‑way toggle.
Oh, and let's not forget the single ply white pickguard which adds a nice appointment.
The only nitpick we found? The control cavity cover wasn’t completely flush. Hardly a functional issue, but worth noting.
Usability and Sound
The Chris Buck Revstar Standard retains everything that made us fall in love with the Revstar line in the first place, while adding just enough custom detail to set it apart. This is a versatile, tone-rich, beautifully built instrument with wide appeal. And come on… who doesn’t love a good goldtop?
We reviewed one of the original Revstars back in 2018 (check out that review here) and loved it. This model feels like the natural evolution of the line. For sound samples and a full walkthrough, check out our video review:
We forgot to point out the volume and tone sweeps in our video. Make 7 your new 10 on the volume knob to clean it up a bit. Then dial to 10 for boost and gain. You don't need to live at 10 all the time.
Documentation and Product Support
The Chris Buck Signature Revstar Standard includes adjustment tools for both bridge and truss rod, and a general user’s manual. Yamaha has extensive support documentation on their website.
Yamaha guitars include a one-year parts and labor warranty on the hardware/electronics/components, and a limited lifetime warranty on the top, neck, back, and sides.
Price
The RS02CB Chris Buck Signature Revstar Standard (MSRP $2,180) sells for $1,299 street and includes a well‑padded gig bag. It comes strung with Elixir Nanoweb .10–.46.
