If there's one thing your humble reviewer enjoys, it's a good solo artist album; particularly when the solo musician in question routinely tours with a brilliant and eccentric artist such as Danny Elfman. More importantly, it's always exciting when a solo album proves the artist can fully exhibit their exceptional talent on their own. Such an album is exactly what we received this month from guitarist Nili Brosh on her first new instrumental effort in six years, Eventide. The album is loaded with captivating lead work provided by Brosh that transcends melodic jazz-inspired grooves, hard-rocking riffs and a spacey, optimistic atmosphere. Respectively, the best examples of these vibes displayed on Eventide can be found on the jazzy "Lavender Mountains," the energetic "Every Player Wins," and the inspiring, dream-like closing track "Song for Hope."
As far as production quality goes, it would be difficult not to pick up on every guitar lick Brosh delivers and its well-executed rhythmic accompaniment. Her brilliant blend and balance of rock infused with jazz and synth elements throughout Eventide will surely grab the attention of a wide range of rock enthusiasts. If you're a fan of instrumental players like Joe Satriani, you'll definitely enjoy this release. Like Satch—and unlike the lengthy tracks you get from prog metal players, Brosh keeps her songs focused and on point. The album is thus relatively short and sweet, and is sure to delight both rock and jazz fans.
Overall, Eventide is a strong, satisfying release from Nili Brosh, with something for everyone to enjoy. In contrast to the tracks I cited, it's not an album that pushes a particular song or two to the listener but instead delivers a complete listening experience best kept to a full playthrough. It's definitely worth picking up a copy. Highly enjoyable!
